After having trained directly under Maria Montessori, Dr. Margaret Potts traveled to Council Bluffs in 1968. It was while living in Council Bluffs that Dr. Potts passed on her Montessori knowledge to Dorothy Woods and Irene Dawson. With the help of Dr. Potts, Irene and Dorothy started Montessori Children’s House.
In 2006, operation of the Montessori Children’s House was assumed by Heather Davis. While ownership of the school has changed, teachers at the preschool are still trained by Dorothy Woods. This is a rare experience which gives the school a uniqueness and purity rarely found in Montessori programs today. We feel privileged to have the opportunity to provide children with the materials and experience that will create a lifelong love for learning.
“There can be no great superstructure built on a poor foundation.”
Montessori Children’s House is blessed to have a hardworking and dedicated staff. All of the teachers were introduced to Montessori as parents of preschool students. Continuity is a valuable asset to the program with virtually no turnover since Ms. Davis took over in 2006. All teachers have received Montessori training and participate in continuing education as required by the state of Iowa.
Heather Davis is the director of Montessori Children’s House. She is an active members of her community and schools. Her passion for the value of education for younger children led her to Montessori Children’s House. She received their Montessori training in 2006.
Heather Davis has been an educator for young children in various roles throughout her adult life. She received her Early Childhood Education degree in 1994. Heather believes strongly in the Montessori philosophy and the value of individual instruction to help each child reach his or her personal best. As a mother of four boys, she realizes how each child’s educational needs are unique.
Children from three through six years of age may be enrolled. Kindergarten is also an option.
